Dr. Charle Viljoen is a Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital in Cape Town. He has a strong academic and clinical background.
He graduated MBChB with distinction from the University of Pretoria, achieving the highest marks in his final year, and completed a Master’s degree in Internal Medicine as well as a PhD at the University of Cape Town. He trained in Cardiology at Groote Schuur Hospital, followed by further subspecialist training in Cardiac Electrophysiology.
He received the International Resident Leadership Award from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2018 and was selected for the World Heart Federation Emerging Leaders Programme in 2019. He holds EHRA certification in Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices and became a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) in 2023.
His clinical interests include arrhythmias, device therapy, and heart failure, with a particular focus on conduction system pacing (CSP). With a strong commitment to medical education, he developed the ECG APPtitude mobile app, which has been downloaded over 30,000 times globally.
Dr Viljoen serves on the executive committee of the Cardiac Arrhythmia Society of Southern Africa (CASSA) and has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, including in European Heart Journal (EHJ) and Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC).
