Professor Alec Vahanian (France)

Alec Vahanian is Emeritus Professor of Cardiology at Université de Paris. He was chairman of the Cardiology department in Bichat Hospital in Paris during the last 20 years.

He is a cardiologist with a main interest in valvular heart disease and interventional cardiology. He pionnered percutaneous mitral commissurotomy in Europe in 1986 and was involved since the early stages in all transcatheter valve intervention on the aortic, mitral and tricuspid valves.

He was the chairman of the ESC Guidelines on Valvular heart disease in 2007and 2012. He was a member of the ESC board until 2018, chairing successively several committees: Clinical Practice Guidelines, Education ,Registries

He authored more than 500 articles in Peer reviewed Journals and is Guest editor of Eurointervention , Associate Editor of European Heart Journal ,editorial consultant for JACC Cardiovascular intervention

He collaborated with “La Chaine de l’ Espoir “ for several years in Maputo and is now involved in the collaboration with Mali.
