Dr. Birkemeyer graduated from medical school at Justus-Liebig-University Gießen. He completed a two-year research scholarship as undergraduate which was funded by the German Scholarship Foundation.
After specialist training in internal medicine, cardiology and intensive care medicine he became deputy head of cardiology at the Schwarzwald Baar Klinikum, where he set up a comprehensive interventional service and regional primary PCI network.
In 2011 he joined the structural heart team at the University Hospital of Rostock. In 2014 he became partner at the Herzklinik Ulm and joined the structural heart team at the University Hospital of Ulm where he is also an Associate Professor of Cardiology.
His main research interests are primary PCI and coronary device development. Dr. Birkemeyer has been involved in more than 40 cardiology trials and has published more than 60 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters. He is a member of several professional associations, including the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), Association for Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI) of the European Society of Cardiology, German Cardiac Society (DGK) and the Working Group Interventional Cardiology (AGIK) of the German Cardiac Society.
